So as you probably are aware, a bunch of retailers released their December sales data and comps today. Generally, most companies’ sales sucked less than analysts’ consensus—although beating year-over-year comps for December 2008 is a pretty low bar (like being the most beautiful person at bingo night at the retirement home). Two companies in particular that were of interest to me today were Urban Outfitters and good old A&F. The two companies reported results that told two stories in this recession.
Happy New Year fellow TDLers—hope you enjoyed the holiday season as much as yours truly did (read: it contained copious amounts of alcohol run-ins with college friends in random cities, getting phone numbers from various beautiful women, marshmallows, a chandelier of antlers, and Michelin stars). After eating nothing but grapefruit, Icelandic yogurt, and Pedialyte for the last few days, I’m detoxed and ready to kick off 2010 with you all!
Hi TDL darlings, sorry for my prolonged absence. I pulled an Alice in Wonderland and drank a funny little bottle of unidentified liquid labeled “Drink Me” and here I am, one month later with a new pair of Marc Jacobs shoes and some new stamps in my passport that I can’t quite make out. So, where to start than talking about everybody’s favorite-but-forgettable store in the mall. And no, I’m not talking a certain sketchy magazine rack behind the food court.
It’s now October, which means retailers will begin silently queuing up their Christmas decorations and fake inflatable snowglobes up for November 1st. After last holiday’s disastrous season, stores this year are proceeding cautiously into the winter months, keeping inventories tight and the cap on the eggnog tighter. However, predictably a toy war of epic proportions is already brewing.
After a torrid eight-day love affair with a pair of Givenchy leather boots (don’t worry, gentlemen, it ended amicably), I decided I’d come back from prowling the Champs-Élysées and tell you about one of my favorite retailers to ride the current economic trend—Inditex (Industria de Diseño Textil, S.A.) The Spanish retailer is best known for their international brand ZARA, a European-minded retailer for men & women that emphasizes razor-sharp trendy outfits at affordable prices.
Since I practically live in the shoe salon of Saks’ ($SKS) NYC flagship, I take an unreasonable interest in this retailer’s particular fate. Jim Cramer got his panties in a bunch yesterday in his Lightning Round about $SKS, using his dousing rod to predict that the $6 stock is headed to $9 (as usual, without providing any substantiation whatsoever.) Saks did get a nice bump today in trading, closing up over 5% today at $6.92—mostly on the better-than-expected Census Bureau data on advance monthly retail sales data for August.
Hello, fellow DL denizens. Just taking a break from my usual Sunday evening routine (wishlisting items from notcouture, laundry, backdated financial reading, planning for another week of mayhem, etc.) to go over some ideas that have been floating around in my head about the larger names in retail.
